Concreate adds new flooring system to its product line

Decorative component supplier Concreate has introduced the Rocksolid flooring system to its extensive range of interior design products, at its show house in Johannesburg.

19 March, 2012; The Rocksolid polyurea floor coatingsystem, which is imported from America and available from the Concreate show house in Johannesburg, is a professional floor coating system that offers an environmentally-friendly polyurea floor finish that provides contractors and home owners with a premium floor coating in the most economical way.
Concreate is an interactive hub where anyone can experience the world of concrete.

Architects and interior designers can be inspired through the showroom and create their unique designs using the products, while builders and contractors have the opportunity to offer their clients attractive and decorative finishes that are time saving, cost saving and energy efficient.
"The Rocksolid system features durability that is twenty times stronger than epoxy coatings; is resistant to harsh chemicals such as salt, oil, gas and other abrasives and has a fast curing time – foot traffic areas will cure in four hours and vehicle traffic areas will cure in as little as 24 hours," explains Concreate director Peter Norton.

Polyurea is a type of elastomer that is derived from the reaction product of an isocyanate component and a synthetic resin blend component, and is more flexible than epoxy, will not crack or peel over time and therefore allows for the natural movement of the concrete beneath it. Polyurea has been used for over 25 years in industrial applications such as pipeline coatings, tank lining, water treatment plants, man holes and sewer linings. Its features make it the ideal product for the high demand places on an average garage floor.

The Rocksolid flooring system is a single component system which is easy to install, has a low odourand is ideal for areas that require quick return-to-service rates, such as restaurants, offices, factories and garages. Where most epoxy floor coating systems come standard with only one thin coat of product,Rocksolid floor's UV stable polyurea top coat will not yellow or fade over time because the fast curing, multi-coat system allows all steps to be completed in just hours, with 20 times the strength of epoxy.

"The system is easily installed in just a few steps. The primer body coat is applied, decorative chips are broadcast over the wet primer, and the loose chips are then blown away and recovered. After that, the chips are then scraped from the floor, vacuumed up and the last coat of sealant is applied. The floor surface is durable, doesn't require recoating and is not slippery when wet. The floor is easily maintained and can be pressure washedwithout damage to the surface," explains Norton.
Floor Preparation
Floor preparation is crucial to the proper installation of Rocksolid floors as the floor coating system will not be able to penetrate and bond to concrete in areas where heavy oil or fluid contamination has occurred. To remedy these areas, a full concentration of degreaser, such as the Rocksolid CPC product, should be used prior to etching the floor. The use of Rocksolid floors safe etch solution will help to remove some minor contaminants but its main purpose is to profile the concrete to provide an anchor for adhesion.

The Rocksolid floor coating systems can also be used on vertical areas, such as walls and staircases. Norton explains that this is because the Polyurea basecoat material is thicker and dries faster than epoxy, and can therefore be used on coating of vertical surfaces, stairs, curb block and sheetrock. The coating will hold strong and will notrun down the vertical surface during curing. What's more, decorative chips can be broadcast onto to these surfaces to seamlessly match the floor.

"The decorative chips serve to enhance the appearance of the surface. Two different chip blends are included in each kit, allowing the customer to choose their decorative look. The two chip blends can also be combined for a truly original finish. The chip blends were chosen to accentuate the color of the floor and also provide a distraction to the naked eye as dirt and debris will be less visible. These chips, which are made of vinyl as opposed to other products that use acrylic, are designed to adherebetter to the coating system. This leaves the user with a flatter floor that the chips are embedded in, and so eliminating peeling or flaking," concludes Norton.

Concreate provides industries with a Buddy for concrete innovation

The Concreateshow house, which showcases the latest trends in concrete use in design, has introduced a revolutionary new range of concrete moulding products to the local market.

31 January, 2012: South African construction professionals and homeowners can transform and mould concrete into almost any shape or structure by making use of the innovative Buddy Rhodes System of bagged concrete and moulds, available exclusively through Concreate.
Johannesburg-basedConcreate is an innovative show house which was established in September 2011 to display the numerous advantages of concrete and cement in architectural and interior design applications, offering attractive and decorative finishes that are time-saving, cost-saving and energy efficient.
Concreate director Peter Norton points out that the USA-based Buddy Rhodes mixing system is among the most innovative for modern concrete applications. “The Buddy Rhodes bone white spray coat mix is ideal for architects andinterior designers, as it enables the user to mould and colour concrete into aesthetically-pleasing and modern items such as furniture and work top surfaces. Having witnessed the benefits of the system first-hand at a trade show in the USA, we decided to introduce Buddy Rhodes as a complimentary product to the local building industry.”

Due to the simplicity of the mix, Norton points out that concrete structures can be moulded within a matter of hours. “The Buddy Rhodes white spray coat mix is time and cost-effective, as the user simply has to mix the product with water, before adding the curing polymer, pigment and water reducer,” he continues. “The end result is an environmentally-friendly and highly-durable product that is easy to form and texture. The mix is also available with 16 different pigments; thereby, ensuring that the user is able to create the exact concrete structure of their choice.”

Norton notes that Concreate has been making use of the Buddy Rhodes white spray coat mix system for the past six months to create concrete counter tops andfurniture for leading architectural firm Urban Works. “The items built for Urban Works using the Buddy Rhodes mixing system have proven to be highly-popular. As a result, it has also been used for making basins for homeowners, and numerous additional items of furniture for the Concreate showroom.”
Norton points out that the biggest challenge facing Concreate is the fact that a number of people still think of concrete as an unattractive material, reserved only for foundations and sidewalks. “Concrete is an extraordinary material which is practical, expressive and aesthetic. To most people; however, it is cold, grey and ugly. Concreate has been established to dispel that myth, by showcasing to visitors the warmth and colour that concrete can bring to a home. Concrete can be produced from almost any location, and is inexpensive, durable, non-combustible and impervious to decay.”

Looking to the future, Norton is confident that Concreate has potential for significant growth in the South African market. “Despite the fact that the show house has only been open for a matter of months, Concreate has already generated a considerable amount of interest from numerous architects nationwide. I am proud to say that several projects have already been implemented as a result, and we are looking forward to an exciting future, which has the potential for considerable growth and expansion,” he concludes.

Partnership brings local DIY television show to Concreate

Concreate recently became the set of the local DIY television show 'DIY met Riaan'

12 April, 2012: In partnership with cement and concrete giant AfriSam, Riaan Garforth-Venter and his new DIY side kick Freedom Hadebe, joined the rest of the Setsebi Productions team at the Concreate show house in Fourways, Johannesburg to film an episode of the well-known local DIY TV show, 'DIY met Riaan'.
The show will be aired on Saturday, May 26 at 08:30 on SABC 2 and shows viewers how to lay a concrete floor.
In the new season of the show, Garforth-Venter introduces a new "How To" section, which teaches viewers all about cement, including how to choose the correct cement for specific projects, mixing the product, plastering and brick laying. The team also go on a site visit to AfriSam's cement plant in the Northern Cape to find out how cement is made.
On the first day of filming, the team demonstrated how to lay a concrete floor and which products are best for the job. They then returned a few days later to film the final product after it had been mechanically ground and polished by Concreate.
"We are very proud to have the show filmed at our show house. We hope that this will expand our name to the industry, as well as build a strong working relationship with AfriSam, who have recently come on board as Concreate partners, and sponsors of the DIY met Riaan show," says Concreate director Peter Norton.
AfriSam marketing manager, Victor Bouguenon, explains that through this partnership, which came about in the latter half of last year, AfriSam and Concreate aim to co-develop, trademark and market a range of architectural concrete products and solutions.
"AfriSam is renowned for its consistent quality in the ready mixed concrete market and has a strong presence in the major urban nodes. This complements Concreate's cutting edge position in decorative concrete finishes. AfriSam is also building a presence with the architectural profession through its close association with the South African Association of Architects (SAIA) and its sponsorship of the AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture and sees its close working relationship with Concreate as a means to further entrench its position with the specifiers," he concludes.
